Do your kids choose their own clothes?

Do you let your kids pick up their own clothes?

What would be the youngest age you would let a child pick out their own clothes?

Good question. I had kept buying wear for my child until he was about 16, Never considering or asking him to join me and buy what he likes. Looking back, this was a mistake. I should of ask him to join me and pick what he likes sooner. Of course, with in reasonable limits. I guess that 10 would be a reasonable age for a child to join you while you shop for his wear.

I think around the age of 12 it's reasonable to take your child shopping. I think the parent should try and give the child a feeling of autonomy though there will be cases in which the parent will lay the law.

It's important to help children develop their own taste for clothes and give them room to express it, with a limit, of course.

I think that they should go with you when they start showing an interest so that you can start to teach them the kind of things to look for in clothing but I think they should pick their own clothes when they are paying for them. Since she was 7 or 8, I have let my daughter shop for her clothes with me; but I retain final veto power. After several miserable (for both of us) shopping trips to buy her clothes, I started to tell her ahead of time that I will not pay for clothes that are inappropriate (she's 16 now) and that if she made a scene, I would walk out of the store and we would try again another day when she could follow the rules. We only did this once several years ago and I have not had to repeat it since.  I don't expect her to wear turtlenecks and knee socks... I will let her pick popular styles as long as they have no inappropriate words, pics, etc. on them and as long as she can bend over and sit down in her jeans, shorts, skirts and blouses without flashing those around her. Maturity has helped and she loves that kids tell her she looks "classy" and ask where she got her clothes... I don't think she could have learned what that meant had I walked in and handed her what she had to wear.  Good luck.
